5 Barriers to Women’s Career Progression

25 Mar 2024 | Careers

Are you thriving at work? If the answer is no, you are not alone. Only 8% of women, according to a recent study conducted by Women Rising, are thriving at work.

This recent 2023 groundbreaking study has shed light on the significant challenges faced by women in their careers, highlighting the need for change and support within our professional environments.

The study also emphasised the significance of having a supportive environment in women’s career growth, particularly when it comes to managing relationships at work. A lack of leadership competence and executive presence impacted 32% of respondents, indicating that more emphasis should be placed on empowering and promoting female leaders within organisations. Furthermore, nearly a third (29%) felt they were not receiving adequate support from managers, mentors or sponsors. Recognising and addressing these gaps in support networks, relationship management and skills building is essential for fostering career advancement and gender equality in the workplace.

Lack of confidence

Confidence emerged as a prevalent stumbling block, with a staggering 53% of respondents reporting that moments of self doubt have impacted their careers. This revelation is both eye opening and concerning, as it suggests that the persistent gender gap in various industries could, in part, be attributed to the internal struggles many women face.

Burnout and impact on wellbeing

Moreover, the study uncovered that burnout is another pressing issue affecting more than half (55%) of women surveyed. The demands of modern day careers can be overwhelming, leading to exhaustion, reduced productivity and, in extreme cases, jeopardising overall wellbeing. Addressing burnout is crucial not just for women’s individual success, but for creating a more equitable and supportive workplace culture.

Stress and lack of work life balance

Additionally, 40% of respondents expressed feeling burdened by excessive stress and time pressure. This is a critical concern that necessitates comprehensive and empathetic solutions from employers and organisations. Reducing stress levels and promoting work life balance, or at least work life integration, can unleash the true potential of women and enable them to thrive professionally.

Access to leadership development and supportive networks

The study also emphasised the significance of having a supportive environment in women’s career growth. A lack of leadership competence and executive presence impacted 32% of respondents, indicating that more emphasis should be placed on empowering and promoting female leaders within organisations. Furthermore, nearly a third (29%) felt they were not receiving adequate support from managers, mentors or sponsors. Recognising and addressing these gaps in support networks and skills building is essential for fostering career advancement and gender equality in the workplace.

Unsupportive manager

Another concerning discovery was that 19% of women reported having an unsupportive manager. Toxic leadership can have detrimental effects on career progression, hindering growth and causing talented individuals to leave organisations prematurely. Creating an inclusive and supportive environment with leaders who champion diversity and inclusion is essential to breaking down barriers for women in the workplace.

Unmanageable workloads

Finally, the study highlighted that unmanageable workloads added significant pressure for 26% of women. Redistributing workloads, providing better resources and implementing effective time management strategies can help alleviate this burden and contribute to a healthier work environment.
