In today’s fast-changing professional landscape, the idea of sticking to a single career path for life feels outdated. Instead, many professionals—especially women—are embracing portfolio careers, combining multiple roles or ventures to create a dynamic and fulfilling work-life blend.
But what exactly is a portfolio career, and why is it so appealing? In this blog, we’ll explore the benefits of portfolio careers and how women can leverage their diverse skills and experiences to build one that aligns with their goals and passions.
What is a Portfolio Career?
A portfolio career involves pursuing multiple income-generating activities simultaneously or sequentially. Rather than being tied to one traditional 9-to-5 role, you might blend freelance projects, part-time roles, consulting, or entrepreneurial ventures.
For example, a woman might work part-time as a digital marketing consultant, teach an online course, and run a small e-commerce store—all part of her portfolio career.
This approach is gaining traction as professionals seek greater career flexibility and fulfillment. In fact, according to a study published by the Harvard Business Review, portfolio careers are a growing trend among those who value diversity in their work and autonomy over their schedules.
Why Women Are Embracing Portfolio Careers
Women, in particular, are finding portfolio careers empowering. Here’s why:
- Career Flexibility
Balancing professional and personal responsibilities is often a priority for women. A portfolio career offers the flexibility to adapt to different seasons of life—whether it’s raising a family, pursuing creative passions, or transitioning into new industries. - Diverse Opportunities
Women often develop a wide range of skills throughout their lives, both professionally and personally. A portfolio career allows them to monetize these skills in unique and varied ways, from consulting and teaching to creative projects or entrepreneurship. - Resilience and Stability
Diversifying income streams can protect against economic uncertainty. By having multiple roles, women can reduce the risk of relying on a single employer or industry, which is particularly valuable in today’s volatile job market. - Purpose and Passion
A portfolio career enables women to focus on work that aligns with their values and passions, fostering a greater sense of purpose and satisfaction.
Benefits of a Portfolio Career
- Financial Independence
By diversifying income sources, women can achieve greater financial independence. For instance, freelancing alongside a part-time role or running a small business alongside consulting work provides multiple revenue streams.
- Enhanced Skill Development
Juggling multiple roles sharpens diverse skills—everything from project management to communication and creative problem-solving. This continuous learning makes portfolio professionals highly adaptable and marketable.
- Better Work-Life Integration
Unlike the rigidity of traditional careers, portfolio careers offer the freedom to design a schedule that works best for you. This makes it easier to prioritize personal commitments while still advancing professionally.
- Career Longevity
Portfolio careers allow women to pivot or evolve their careers as their interests and circumstances change. This adaptability makes it possible to maintain professional relevance and satisfaction over the long term.
Steps to Building a Portfolio Career
- Identify Your Skills and Interests
Start by making a list of your strengths, passions, and marketable skills. Consider how you could leverage these in different roles or projects. For example:
- If you’re a skilled writer, explore freelance writing, teaching workshops, or creating content for brands.
- If you’re passionate about wellness, consider consulting, coaching, or running an online community.
- Start Small
You don’t need to quit your full-time job right away. Begin by taking on a side hustle or freelance project to test the waters. Gradually expand your portfolio as you gain confidence and clarity.
- Build Your Network
A strong professional network is crucial for finding opportunities and support. Reconnect with former colleagues, attend industry events, and use platforms like LinkedIn to showcase your skills and connect with potential clients or collaborators.
- Create a Sustainable Schedule
Balancing multiple roles requires effective time management. Use tools like calendars, task management apps, or even simple to-do lists to stay organized. Remember to build in downtime to avoid burnout.
- Upskill and Adapt
Invest in professional development to stay competitive. Whether it’s learning a new technology, earning certifications, or attending workshops, continuous growth is key to sustaining a successful portfolio career.
My Portfolio Career Journey
I’ve experienced firsthand the transformative power of a portfolio career
When I first jumped into a portfolio career (although I didn’t know it was called that at the time!), it was after experiencing redundancy while on parental leave with my second child. I knew I wanted to start my own business, but I also needed to find my feet, gain experience in different industries, and generate an income. At that point, I didn’t have much public sector experience, so I decided to take on a variety of projects.
One of my first roles was contracting and then working part-time for the NeuroLeadership Institute, a company I deeply admire for their practical neuroscience research and how they apply to leadership and culture development. This opportunity allowed me to dive deeper into my fascination with brain science and apply it in a meaningful way. I also gained my coaching qualifications and got experience in facilitation all the while, working with many amazing and varied organizations. This gave me time to set up my business, get some coaching and independent clients and have valuable days off with my little ones. I will forever treasure those mummy and me times at home and at the park, library, gymnastics and doing sports and swimming classes.
From there, I moved on to work with a children’s charity that I highly respect, contributing to a mission I felt passionately about. I also partnered with several consultancy firms, delivering training and consulting in diverse areas. All the while picking up coaching clients along the way. Through all these experiences, I built a strong profile, gained expertise across multiple industries, and underwent additional training that enhanced my skills.
Over time, I was able to take on more coaching clients and gradually shift my focus. This evolution eventually led me to identify my true calling: helping professional women at the mid-point of their career. After some health leave (a story for another day), I decided to niche down and dedicate myself to empowering women to navigate their careers with confidence and clarity.
“Looking back, embracing a portfolio career was one of the most transformative decisions of my life. It not only allowed me to gain diverse experiences but also gave me the freedom to create a career that aligns with my passions and values.”
What started as a way to “find my feet” has evolved into a deeply fulfilling portfolio career. I now help amazing clients in areas I’m passionate about while enjoying the flexibility that comes with being my own boss.
If I hadn’t taken that bold step, I wouldn’t have discovered what was on the other side—purpose, growth, and balance.
